LIVE QUIZ FOR LECTURES

A free live quiz for your lecture, with a report after.

Klappa Live puts a question on the projector, takes answers from every phone in the room with no student accounts, and gives you a report when the session ends.

THE SHORT ANSWER

What Klappa Live does in a lecture.

Klappa Live is a free live quiz for lectures: the host runs questions from a laptop, a projector view shows them to the room, and students answer from their own phones by entering a 6-character join code at klappa.app/join or scanning a QR code. Students do not need an account or an app install.

After the session, the host gets a report with accuracy for every question and a ranked list of participants, and can export it as a CSV or a PDF.

Klappa is free, including Klappa Live. There is no paid tier. The full feature tour is on the Klappa Live page.

HOW TO RUN ONE

Run a Klappa Live session in five steps.

Hosting a Klappa Live session needs a free Klappa account; joining one does not.

  1. Create a quiz In Klappa, open Live and choose New Session. Start a blank quiz, build one from one of your Klappa decks, or reuse one of your saved quizzes. Each new question starts with a 20-second timer and 1,000 points, and you can change both.
  2. Share the join code Start a session and the host lobby shows the join code, a QR code and a link, with buttons to copy the code or the link. Show it to the room or paste the link into your course chat.
  3. Let the room join Students go to klappa.app/join and type the code, or scan the QR to land on the code directly. They pick a nickname, or tap the dice for a random one, and can choose an emoji avatar. No sign-up, no email.
  4. Put the projector view on the big screen Use the Projector button to open the big-screen view in a new window and drag it to the projector. Then start the session: the first question opens on every phone. While it is open you can add 15 seconds or close it early, then reveal the answer and the distribution, show the leaderboard, skip ahead, or pause the room.
  5. End and read the report End the session and open the host report: participants, overall accuracy, median response time, accuracy by question and a ranked participant list, exportable as CSV or PDF.

QUESTION TYPES

Ten question formats, graded and ungraded.

Klappa Live has ten question formats. Six are scored by the server by default, open response is scored only when you add accepted answers, and a poll, a word cloud and a slide count participation only, so you can check opinion or show content without grading anyone.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

What the projector shows, and what it keeps private.

The Klappa Live projector view is a separate, read-only screen that follows the session: the lobby with the klappa.app/join address, each question as it opens, the answer distribution when you reveal it, a top-three podium on the leaderboard, and a recap when the session finishes.

While a question is open, the projector shows "Answer on your phone" instead of a running tally, so the room cannot copy the crowd. The host console sees the answers coming in; the projector only shows the answered count once the question closes.

Because it is its own window, you can keep the host controls on your laptop and put only the projector view on the shared screen.

AFTER CLASS

The classroom quiz report you keep.

Every Klappa Live session has a host report, which is what turns a quick quiz into something you can act on before the next lecture.

The report shows how many people took part, overall accuracy, the number of questions asked and the median response time. For each question it lists accuracy, how many answered, how many skipped and the median response time, so the topic the room struggled with stands out. A ranked participant list shows each nickname with total points and accuracy.

Export the full report as a CSV for a spreadsheet, or a PDF summary with the leaderboard and per-question accuracy to file with your teaching notes. Nicknames are whatever students typed, so the report tells you how the room did, not who a student is.

FROM YOUR DECKS

Turn a Klappa deck into a lecture quiz.

If you already teach from flashcards, Klappa Live can build a quiz from one of your Klappa decks: each card's front becomes the question, its back becomes the correct answer, and the wrong choices come from the card's own distractors or other cards in the same deck. The draft opens in the editor for you to check.

That makes revision sessions quick to set up for a student society or a TA tutorial. A deck brought in through the Anki import, written from past papers or made with ChatGPT or Claude can become a live quiz for the whole group.

For students, the same decks then keep working after class with Klappa's FSRS-6 scheduling, explained in how FSRS works.

QUESTIONS

Klappa Live questions lecturers ask.

Is Klappa Live free?

Yes. Klappa Live is free for hosts and students, and Klappa has no paid tier. Hosting needs a free Klappa account.

Do students need an account to join?

No. Students join Klappa Live at klappa.app/join with the 6-character code or by scanning the QR code, then pick a nickname. Students who already have a Klappa account and are signed in join from inside the app instead.

Do students need to install an app?

No. Joining Klappa Live runs in the phone's web browser, and the projector view is a web page too.

Can I download the results of a classroom quiz?

Yes. A Klappa Live host report exports as a CSV with per-question accuracy, answered and skipped counts, median response time and the ranked participant list, or as a PDF summary with the leaderboard and per-question accuracy.

Can I use questions that are not graded?

Yes. Polls, word clouds and slides in Klappa Live are not scored, so you can take a quick opinion check or show content between graded questions.

Can I control the timer during a question?

Yes. While a question is open, the Klappa Live host can add 15 seconds or close it early, and the server closes it automatically at the deadline. You can also pause and resume the whole session.
