THE SHORT ANSWER

How do you make flashcards with ChatGPT or Claude?

To make flashcards with Claude or ChatGPT, add Klappa as a custom connector using the URL https://mcp.klappa.app/mcp, approve it on a Klappa authorization screen, then ask for cards in plain words. Klappa MCP saves them into a deck in your Klappa library, and you study them there like any other deck.

That is the difference from asking a chatbot for a list of questions. The cards do not stay in the chat for you to copy out. They become real Klappa cards, scheduled with FSRS-6 and studied in Flashcards, Learn, Write and Test.

The full connector is described on Klappa MCP. This page is the practical version: what to set up, what to type, and what each request actually does.

SETUP

Connect Klappa MCP in five steps.

Klappa MCP is a remote server, so there is nothing to install. You need a free Klappa account and a Claude or ChatGPT plan that lets you add custom connectors on the web or desktop. In Claude, Anthropic lists custom connectors on Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. In ChatGPT, OpenAI currently documents write actions for custom MCP apps on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces on ChatGPT web; on Pro, custom MCP connections are read and fetch only, so they cannot save cards.

  1. Generate a Klappa API key In Klappa, open Settings and scroll to Integrations. In the Connect to Claude & ChatGPT panel, press Generate API key and copy it. Klappa shows the key once.
  2. Add the connector in Claude On claude.ai or Claude Desktop, open the connector settings (Customize, then Connectors on Pro and Max), choose Add custom connector and paste https://mcp.klappa.app/mcp.
  3. Or add it in ChatGPT In ChatGPT on the web, turn on Developer mode under Settings, Apps, Advanced settings (an admin may need to allow it), then create an app with the same URL and pick OAuth as the authentication method.
  4. Authorize on the Klappa screen Your assistant sends you to a Klappa authorization page. Paste your API key there and press Authorize. The key stays on Klappa; the assistant only receives an access token tied to your account.
  5. Ask for your first deck Open a chat, turn on the Klappa connector and ask for cards. They appear in your Klappa library straight away.

PROMPTS THAT WORK

What to type once Klappa is connected.

Klappa MCP gives your assistant 19 tools, so plain requests are enough. Each prompt below maps onto a real tool.

Make cards: "Make 8 atomic flashcards on the Krebs cycle in my Biochemistry deck." The assistant writes the cards and saves them with the bulk-insert tool. If no deck in your Klappa library has that exact name, Klappa creates it; if one does, the new cards are added after its last card.

Make cards from your own material: "Turn these lecture notes into cloze cards, one fact per card, and save them to Pharmacology." Paste the notes into the chat first. Each cloze number becomes its own card in the Klappa library. If you want the origin on every card, ask the assistant to include a source, and Klappa adds it as a small Source note on the back.

Fix a card you keep missing: "Find my card about the anion gap and rewrite it to be clearer." The assistant searches your cards, then Klappa's rewrite tool updates that card in place and returns the before and after. This tool uses Klappa's AI features, so they need to be on (see below).

Check what is due: "Quiz me on 5 cards that are due in my Anki Portal decks." Due reviews, ratings and study stats cover the Anki Portal, the part of Klappa that keeps Anki note types and Anki-style scheduling. For decks in the Klappa library, study them in Klappa itself.

Find weak topics: "Which of my Anki Portal decks need the most work?" The learning profile ranks those decks by overdue cards, leeches (cards lapsed four or more times) and lapse rate.

WHAT KLAPPA CHECKS

Klappa keeps the cards short and the account yours.

Klappa MCP pushes the assistant toward atomic cards. When cards arrive, Klappa rejects any front over 300 characters or back over 600 characters and hands them back with the reason, so the assistant can split them and try again. One call takes up to 1,000 cards.

Every tool is scoped to the account that authorized it. Each tool is labelled read-only or write, so your assistant can tell when it is about to change something, and deleting a deck is marked as destructive. A token without write permission cannot run any tool that changes your account.

Access tokens expire after one hour and are renewed with a rotating refresh token. The connection is tied to the API key you pasted: revoke that key in Settings and the connection ends at its next renewal, within an hour.

AI CARD GENERATION

Two ways the cards get written.

Most of the time, Claude or ChatGPT writes the cards itself and Klappa stores them. On that path Klappa sends your cards to no other AI provider.

Klappa also has its own generator tool, which drafts up to 50 cards on a topic with an open-weight model for your assistant to review and save, plus the tool that rewrites a failing card. Both send card text to a third-party AI provider, so both run only if you turned on AI features in Klappa and confirmed you are 16 or older. Klappa also limits how often one account can use them.

The same AI features switch, in Klappa Settings under Privacy, also covers Klappa Cortex, Klappa's study assistant.

AFTER THE CHAT

Studying the cards your assistant made.

Cards saved to the Klappa library study four ways: Flashcards for recall, Learn for multiple choice, Write to type the answer, and Test for a graded pass. Klappa schedules them with FSRS-6 at 0.95 target retention and a 60-day maximum interval. In Study and Learn, FMSR-1 adjusts a review card's interval from that card's own history once it has three or more reviews. How Klappa schedules reviews explains both.

You can study on the web in any browser or in the Klappa Mac app, which works offline. The iPhone and iPad app is submitted to Apple and not yet on the App Store.

Klappa is free, including Klappa MCP. If you already have an Anki collection, import it and point your assistant at the same account.

QUESTIONS

Making flashcards with AI, answered.

Can ChatGPT make flashcards directly in Klappa?

Yes, on ChatGPT plans that allow write actions in custom MCP apps, which OpenAI currently documents for Business, Enterprise and Edu on ChatGPT web. Add Klappa with the URL https://mcp.klappa.app/mcp, choose OAuth, authorize on the Klappa screen, and ask for cards. ChatGPT saves them to a deck in your Klappa library.

Does Klappa work with Claude?

Yes. Klappa MCP works as a custom connector on claude.ai and Claude Desktop, and in Claude Code, where you can add it from the command line with your Klappa API key as a Bearer header. The command is on the Integrations panel in Klappa Settings.

Can I use an MCP server with my Anki decks?

Yes, through Klappa. Import your .apkg into the Klappa Anki Portal, and Klappa MCP lets your assistant create notes and note types, fetch due cards, rate them and read study stats for those decks. New cards go to the Klappa library unless you ask for the Anki Portal.

Does my AI assistant see my Klappa API key?

No. You paste the key on a Klappa authorization page, and Claude or ChatGPT receives only an access token scoped to your account. Revoke the key in Settings and the connection ends at its next token renewal, within an hour.

Does it cost anything?

Klappa and Klappa MCP are free, and Klappa has no paid tier. Whether you can add a custom connector depends on your Claude or ChatGPT plan; Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector.

Can I have the assistant quiz me in the chat?

Yes, for Anki Portal decks. The assistant fetches due cards with their front and back, quizzes you, and can record your Again, Hard, Good or Easy rating so Klappa schedules the next review.
