FOR DENTAL STUDENTS
Klappa is a free flashcard app built by a dental student. Keep the Anki decks you already have, turn multiple-choice past papers into practice decks, and study offline on your Mac.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Klappa is a free flashcard app built by a dental student for dental school. It opens the Anki decks you already use with each card's schedule, turns multiple-choice past papers into practice decks, and studies offline in the Mac app.
Every card is scheduled with FSRS-6. Klappa decks aim for 95% retention and never wait more than 60 days between reviews, so a fact from first year keeps coming back while you prepare for a block exam, the INBDE or the LDEK.
There is no paid tier. Klappa Cortex and Klappa Live are included.
FROM THE FOUNDER
I'm Fahim Mohi, a dental student in Poland, and I built Klappa for my own exam decks. I wanted three things from one app: keep the Anki decks I already had, practise past papers as real multiple choice, and keep studying when there is no connection.
Klappa does all three today, and everything on this page is part of the free app. In my experience it is why I study less and remember more. That is one student's experience, not a promise about your grades.
Klappa is independent and not affiliated with any university or exam board. It has no built-in INBDE, NBDE or LDEK question bank: you bring the material, and Klappa makes sure you remember it. More about the project is on the about page.
YOUR ANKI DECKS
Klappa imports Anki .apkg files through the Anki Portal and keeps the note types, the deck hierarchy, images, audio and each card's due date. In the normal case, a card that was due tomorrow in Anki is due tomorrow in Klappa.
That matters for dental decks, which lean on pictures. Cloze cards come across, and so does Image Occlusion, both Anki's built-in type and the older add-on, with the masks drawn without scripts. Masked tooth charts, radiographs and anatomy plates keep working.
On the website a single .apkg can be up to 1.9 GB. Klappa for Mac has no upload cap and reads large collections natively. The full walkthrough is in how to import an Anki deck, and every Anki Portal deck exports back to .apkg.
PAST PAPERS
Klappa's Build MCQ tool reads a Word or PDF question paper with the correct option highlighted, or questions you paste in, and builds a multiple-choice deck you can study in Klappa or export as .apkg. The longer guide is past papers to flashcards.
FOUR STUDY MODES
Klappa decks study four ways from the same cards: Flashcards, Learn, Write and Test. Anki Portal decks study as flashcard review; import the .apkg into a Klappa deck instead to get all four modes, with a fresh schedule.
In Flashcards and Learn, Klappa's own FMSR-1 model adjusts a review card's interval from that card's own history once it has at least three reviews. Before that, the FSRS-6 schedule is unchanged. The details are in how Klappa schedules reviews.
| Mode | What you do | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Flashcards | Recall the answer, then grade yourself. Spaced repetition on FSRS-6. | Daily reviews |
| Learn | Answer multiple choice, with Cortex explanations when AI features are on | A first pass through a new topic |
| Write | Type the answer from memory. A small typo still counts. | Naming nerves, structures and drugs without prompts |
| Test | Take a full practice test with multiple choice, true or false and written questions | Checking yourself before an exam |
STUDY GROUPS
Klappa Live turns one of your Klappa decks into a live quiz: put the questions on a shared screen and everyone answers from a phone or laptop. Friends join with a session code and do not need a Klappa account.
The host sees results as each question is answered and keeps a report at the end, so the group knows which topics to go over again. See Klappa Live.
WHERE IT RUNS
Klappa runs in any modern browser, and Klappa for Mac runs on macOS 11 or later with Apple Silicon and Intel builds. Open a deck once while online and the Mac app keeps it, so you can review with no connection and your grades sync when you reconnect. Get Klappa for Mac.
The iPhone and iPad app is submitted to Apple and not yet on the App Store. Until it is released, the website works in Safari on iPhone.
